Serial network connection with the Com-Server++ from Wiesemann & Theis

Serial communication continues to play an important role in corporate and production networks even in the age of Industry 4.0. The Com-Server++ from Wiesemann & Theis combines proven RS232, RS422, and RS485 technology with modern TCP/IP Ethernet networking and extends it with advanced functions for industrial automation. As a versatile communication converter, the Com-Server++ supports not only virtual COM ports but also Modbus/TCP gateway operation, FTP client/server functionality, box-to-box communication, and secure TLS encryption.

Its compact, robust design with DIN rail mounting, optional PoE power supply, and simple plug & play commissioning via WuTility make the Com-Server++ a future-proof interface between serial and IP-based environments – ideal for automation, data archiving, and Industry 4.0 applications.

Seamless integration of serial devices

The Com-Server++ enables direct integration of serial devices such as controllers, sensors, or measuring systems into an Ethernet network. Using Windows COM port redirection, communication from existing applications can easily be routed through a virtual COM port, without any software modification. This is particularly valuable in virtual environments (VMware, Hyper-V) where physical COM ports are unavailable.

Data transfer can optionally be protected with TLS-PSK encryption to ensure security and protect sensitive data from unauthorized access. Additionally, multipoint operation allows simultaneous distribution of serial data to up to six network participants.

Box-to-box communication

The box-to-box function allows two Com-Server++ units to be linked to establish a transparent point-to-point connection over the network. This enables replacement of long serial cable runs or the creation of virtual serial connections between remote sites – independent of the operating system of the connected devices.

The connection is stable thanks to automatic reconnection mechanisms and also supports optional TLS encryption for maximum security. Multipoint and packetization features allow precise adaptation to serial protocols with strict timing requirements.

TCP/UDP socket communication

The Com-Server++ offers developers the ability to integrate serial devices directly into custom applications:

  • TCP server mode: waits for incoming connections and forwards data from the serial interface in real time.
  • TCP client mode: initiates outbound connections to predefined endpoints.
  • UDP communication: connectionless and ideal for low-latency, time-critical applications.

All socket variants can be secured with TLS and support multipoint data transmission.

Modbus/TCP gateway functionality

The integrated Modbus/TCP gateway extends the Com-Server++ with a reliable protocol conversion feature between Modbus/RTU and Modbus/TCP. Devices with RS232, RS422, or RS485 interfaces – such as energy meters or frequency converters – can thus be easily integrated into modern SCADA or IoT networks. The gateway operates efficiently and without additional hardware, adding value to any process environment.

FTP client/server for automated data transfer

The Com-Server++ supports FTP client and FTP server functionality for automated backup or provisioning of serial data. Typical use cases include transmitting measured values from scales or barcode scanners to central servers or downloading configuration files automatically to the device.

As many operating systems natively support FTP commands, this feature can be seamlessly integrated into existing IT workflows without additional software.

Hardware and interfaces

The Com-Server++ is built for demanding industrial applications and features:

  • Switchable interface for RS232/RS422/RS485
  • Ethernet port (10/100BaseT) with autosensing and auto-MDIX
  • Optional 20 mA/TTY version
  • PoE support or external power input (12–48 V DC) via screw terminal
  • DIN rail mounting and durable metal housing

The design complies with EN 61000-6-2 (immunity) and EN 55032:2015 + A1 Class B (emissions), ensuring interference-free operation in demanding EMC environments.

Simple setup and advanced management

Configuration takes only a few clicks using WuTility. Web-based management (HTTP/HTTPS with certificate handling), Telnet, and control sockets are available for setup. The device supports DHCP and advanced features such as SLIP, Wake-on-LAN, and 802.1x EAP (MD5).

With remote configuration capability, the Com-Server++ is especially suitable for distributed networks where devices must be centrally managed.

Typical applications

  • Industrial automation: connecting transmitters, energy meters, or PLCs to Ethernet networks.
  • Remote applications: serial device access across large distances via box-to-box connections.
  • Data management: automatic transfer of serial log data to FTP servers.
  • IoT integration: connecting serial sensors and actuators to cloud or SCADA systems.
  • Legacy connectivity: integrating older serial devices without network capabilities.

Reliability and warranty

The Com-Server++ is designed for continuous 24/7 industrial operation and offers exceptional reliability. Wiesemann & Theis provides a five-year warranty, underscoring the product’s longevity and quality.

Com-Server++
The Com-Server++ enables seamless integration of serial devices with RS232, RS422, or RS485 interfaces into modern network environments. Windows COM redirection allows serial programs to be redirected to virtual COM ports without requiring changes to the program code.

This makes the Com-Server++ the ideal solution for virtual environments such as VMware or HyperV, where physical COM ports are missing, or as a replacement for local serial interfaces. Communication can optionally be secured with TLS-PSK encryption to protect sensitive data.
