Automation made easy with the rule.box hub from Wiesemann & Theis

The rule.box hub from Wiesemann & Theis is a compact, powerful control center for professional automation requirements in building automation and Industry 4.0. It integrates the graphical development tool Node-RED, providing a browser-based drag-and-drop editor for creating complex automation processes without in-depth programming knowledge.

Preinstalled nodes for Wiesemann & Theis Web-IOs, Web thermometers, and Com-Servers enable direct connection for measurement data acquisition and control. Additional downloadable nodes allow integration of third-party devices and cloud services with ease.

Graphical automation with Node-RED

Node-RED is an open-source platform used for IoT and automation projects since 2013. In the rule.box hub, Node-RED is preinstalled and ready for use. The user interface allows functional blocks (nodes) for input, processing, and output to be linked via mouse clicks.

Example: A web thermometer measures room temperature, which is linked through Node-RED to a climate control node. If the temperature exceeds a defined threshold, a signal is automatically sent to a Web-IO output contact to activate an air conditioning unit.

Preinstalled nodes for Wiesemann & Theis products simplify setup considerably, while additional nodes for MQTT, Modbus, REST APIs, or cloud platforms like AWS and Azure enable integration into complex systems.

Interfaces and network integration

With two separate network interfaces, the rule.box hub can serve multiple network zones, such as separating production and administration networks. This architecture enhances security and creates clear data flow structures.

Communication with connected devices uses standard IP protocols, and compatible nodes allow direct control and reading of sensors and actuators. Non-public custom nodes can be integrated upon request to meet individual customer requirements.

Simple setup and web-based management

Initial setup takes only three clicks using Wiesemann & Theis WuTility software. The integrated web interface provides a fast, clear Web-Based Management system for all configuration and management tasks – from network settings and flow management to user rights.

Flexible power supply and energy efficiency

The rule.box hub can be powered via Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) or an external DC supply (24–48 V). PoE reduces installation work and cable requirements, while buffer capacitors allow safe shutdown during power loss. The design is optimized for low energy consumption, making it ideal for continuous operation and eco-friendly installations.

Data processing and visualization

Data can be stored locally in the file system or in databases such as MariaDB or SQLite. Visualization is handled through the integrated Node-RED dashboard, which displays real-time values and device states. Dashboards can be customized to show sensor readings like temperature, humidity, or switch states, and to directly control actuators.

Example: In a smart building dashboard, current CO₂ levels are displayed, and the user can directly activate ventilation systems from the interface.

Standards compliance and reliable operation

The rule.box hub complies with:

  • EN 61000-6-2: immunity
  • EN 55032:2015 + A1 Class B: emissions
  • EN 61000-3-2 and EN 61000-3-3: electromagnetic compatibility

CE and UL certification allow worldwide deployment. The durable housing is designed for continuous operation and easy DIN rail mounting. Wiesemann & Theis provides a five-year warranty.

Practical examples

  • Building automation: control of lighting, HVAC, and security systems based on sensor data
  • Industrial automation: evaluation of production sensors and automatic activation of manufacturing equipment
  • Smart energy: integration of energy meters to optimize consumption

Universal IoT control center

The rule.box hub combines easy graphical automation with powerful hardware and secure network architecture. It is the perfect solution for connecting and centrally controlling diverse systems and devices under one interface – flexible, efficient, and future-ready.

The rule.box hub comes pre-installed with Node-RED, an open-source development tool used since 2013 for IoT and automation applications. Node-RED enables the creation of automation workflows by dragging connections between input, output, and processing nodes in a browser-based editor.

This intuitive interface requires no deep programming knowledge, making the rule.box hub particularly attractive for users without extensive programming experience. Pre-installed nodes allow direct integration of Wiesemann & Theis devices like Web-IOs, Web Thermometers, and Com-Servers to read and control data such as temperature, switch states, or serial signals.
