RS232 Universal Serial T-Switch from Wiesemann & Theis – flexible 2:1 coupling of three serial devices

The RS232 Universal Serial T‑Switch from Wiesemann & Theis enables connection of three serial devices in virtually any uni‑ or bidirectional 2:1 configuration. With a master port “C” (DTE pin assignment) and two slave ports “A” and “B” (DCE pin assignment), each equipped with 9‑pin Sub‑D connectors, the T‑Switch offers flexible operating modes, baud rate and format conversion, and integrated data buffers per channel.

Its industrial‑grade housing, DIN rail mounting, and high immunity according to EN 61000‑6‑2 make the device an ideal interface solution for Industry 4.0, automation, and building management systems.

Flexible switching modes

The T‑Switch supports two main switching types:

  • Switching via control sequences: Switching between two devices controlled by defined command strings—e.g., an industrial PC alternately controlling two printers.
  • Time‑controlled switching: Two data sources share a peripheral device with an adjustable switching interval—ideal for allowing workstations to share a printer or card reader.

The four data channels (Master C ↔ Slave A, Master C ↔ Slave B) each feature a 1 MB buffer to prevent data loss. The integrated return channel enables bidirectional communication with peripherals such as hand scanners or plotters.

Baud rate and parameter conversion

A key feature is its baud rate converter functionality. Each interface can be configured individually:

  • Adjusting baud rates (e.g., 9600 to 115,200 baud)
  • Translating data formats
  • Modifying handshake protocols to control data flow

This allows devices with different fixed communication parameters to be interconnected. Per‑channel buffering prevents overflow and ensures uninterrupted data transmission.

Management and diagnostics

For easy configuration, the T‑Switch includes a settings dump function that outputs current parameters. This simplifies commissioning and troubleshooting in complex serial networks.

Industrial design and mounting

The rugged housing is optimized for DIN rail mounting, providing:

  • Secure installation in control cabinets
  • Neat cable routing
  • Space‑saving integration

Power supply and energy efficiency

The device is powered via a screw terminal with up to 24 V input. The wide voltage range allows connection to various industrial power supplies. The energy‑efficient electronics are suitable for continuous operation.

Note: A power supply unit is not included.

Standards and certifications

The T‑Switch complies with:

  • EN 61000‑6‑2 – Immunity
  • EN 55032:2015 + A1 Class B – Emissions
  • EN 61000‑3‑2 / EN 61000‑3‑3 – Power compatibility

With CE and UL certification, it is suitable for worldwide use. Wiesemann & Theis provides a five‑year warranty.

Typical applications

  • Building management: Allowing two access control systems automatic access to a shared card reader.
  • Industrial automation: An industrial PC alternately controlling two printers via RS232.
  • Office environments: Two workstations sharing a hand scanner without manual cable changes.
  • Analysis and logging systems: Switching machine data to two analysis devices for simultaneous processing.

Versatile serial switch for industry and administration

The RS232 Universal Serial T‑Switch delivers flexible switching modes, independent port configuration, large data buffers, and robust mounting options. It is the ideal choice for applications with complex serial communication requirements in Industry 4.0, automation technology, and building management.

RS232 Universal Serial T-Switch
The RS232 Universal Serial T-Switch enables flexible connection of three serial devices via two main operating modes: switching by control sequences and timed switching. In the "switching by control sequences" mode, one computer can control two serial devices alternately by control sequences from one of the three interfaces.

For example, an industrial PC can alternately control two RS232 printers to prioritize print jobs. In the "timed switching" mode, two computers share a serial peripheral device, such as a printer, plotter, hand scanner, or card reader, with the switching time individually adjustable.
