I/O Controller 2 – Flexible interface for serial interfaces and digital control over Ethernet

The HW group I/O Controller 2 is a versatile solution for integrating RS‑232/485 interfaces and digital I/O into Ethernet networks. Featuring a full‑featured 9‑pin RS‑232/485 port, eight digital inputs, and eight digital outputs, it seamlessly combines serial communication with modern networking technology — ideal for industrial, commercial, and security applications.

From barcode scanners and access systems to vending machines, the I/O Controller 2 offers maximum flexibility, durable hardware, and easy configuration to enhance connectivity across your automation and monitoring infrastructure.

Functionality and Applications

The I/O Controller 2 connects one RS‑232/485 port and eight digital I/Os to a LAN network. Using the free HW VSP3 software, the serial port can be accessed as a virtual COM port in Windows, supporting up to 100 remote serial ports on a single PC.

The digital inputs and outputs can be controlled through the web interface or via Modbus/TCP protocol, allowing easy integration into SCADA systems or industrial control software.

Box‑to‑Box Mode:

Two I/O Controller 2 units can be connected via LAN in Box‑to‑Box mode, tunneling serial and digital I/O signals bidirectionally. This extends the range of RS‑232/485 connections and digital signals without additional physical wiring.

Typical Applications:

  • Connecting RS‑232 devices such as barcode scanners, RFID readers, printers, or displays
  • Controlling actuators such as locks, signal horns, or power switches
  • Monitoring sensors (e.g., PIR motion detectors, door contacts, or security systems)
  • Automating vending machines, access control systems, or UPS management

Technical Specifications

  • 1× RS‑232/485 port (RxD, TxD, GND, CTS, RTS, DSR, DTR, RI, CD), up to 115,200 Bd
  • 8× digital inputs (potential‑free, 5–20 V DC)
  • 8× digital outputs (open collector, max. 50 V / 0.5 A)
  • M2M protocols: HTTP, Telnet, TCP Server, TCP Client/Server
  • Configuration via integrated webserver or Telnet
  • Supports Modbus/TCP and RFC2217
  • Free HW VSP3 software: NT service, x64 support, up to 100 virtual COM ports

Developers can use the HWg SDK with examples in C++, C#, PHP, Java, and other programming languages, making integration into custom applications and SCADA systems fast and straightforward.

Digital Signal Control

The eight digital inputs of the I/O Controller 2 capture switch signals or status feedback, while the eight outputs directly control external devices or relays to trigger actions — for example, opening a gate or activating an alarm.

Rugged Design and Mounting Options

  • Dimensions: 100 × 94 × 25 mm
  • Metal housing for industrial environments
  • Operating temperature: –30 °C to +85 °C
  • Mounting options: wall, 19" rack, or DIN rail

The I/O Controller 2 is a powerful interface for industrial and commercial integration of RS‑232/485 devices and digital inputs/outputs into Ethernet networks. With Modbus/TCP support, Box‑to‑Box functionality, and rugged housing, it’s the ideal solution for automation, remote control, and security applications.

I/O Controller 2: Serial and Digital Control

I/O Controller 2: Serial and Digital Control
The I/O Controller 2 connects a full RS-232/485 serial port (9-pin) as well as eight digital inputs and outputs to a LAN. The serial port can be used in Windows as a Virtual Serial Port (VSP) via the free HW VSP3 software, allowing up to 100 remote serial ports to be connected to one PC.

A special feature is the Box-2-Box mode, where two I/O Controller 2 devices can be connected via LAN to tunnel serial data and digital inputs/outputs. This significantly extends the range of RS-232/485 interfaces and digital signals without additional wiring.
