PortBox 2 – RS-232/485 to Ethernet converter for industrial and commercial applications

The HW group PortBox 2 is a high‑performance network adapter that seamlessly integrates serial RS‑232 and RS‑485 interfaces into Ethernet networks. Featuring a full 9‑pin RS‑232 port and RS‑485 support, it provides a reliable solution for remote device control and data transmission in industrial, commercial, and security applications.

Perfect for connecting barcode scanners, access‑control systems, or vending machines, the PortBox 2 enables easy integration of serial devices into modern LAN environments while ensuring stable communication.

Functionality and Applications

The PortBox 2 connects an RS‑232/485 port to a LAN so that it can be used in Windows as a virtual serial port (COM port, e.g., COM17). The free HW VSP3 software supports up to 100 remote serial ports per PC and can run as an NT service on Windows servers.

A key feature: The RS‑232 port can be used simultaneously for data capture (e.g., CDR/SMDR from a PBX system) and for remote access as a virtual port.

Box‑to‑Box Mode:

In Box‑to‑Box mode, two PortBox 2 devices connect via LAN and transmit RS‑232/485 serial data bidirectionally. This greatly extends the range of serial connections without additional cabling — ideal for distributed systems.

Typical Applications:

  • Remote control of barcode scanners, RFID readers, or serial displays
  • Integration into access‑control and security systems for online monitoring
  • Automation of vending machines, display systems, and signaling devices
  • Data acquisition for PBX systems or industrial controllers

Technical Specifications

  • 1× RS‑232/485 port with 9‑bit support (RxD, TxD, GND, CTS, RTS, DSR, DTR, RI, CD)
  • Baud rate: up to 115,200 Bd
  • Protocols: HTTP, Telnet, TCP Server, TCP Client/Server
  • Configuration via integrated webserver or Telnet
  • Virtual parity support for 9‑bit protocols
  • Supports Modbus/TCP and RFC2217

The HW VSP3 software allows easy Windows integration (including x64), with NT‑service operation. Developers can use the HWg‑SDK with examples in C++, C#, PHP, Java, and more to create custom integrations.

Box‑to‑Box and Configuration

The Box‑to‑Box mode connects serial devices at different locations as if they were wired together locally. The intuitive web interface enables quick setup of baud rate, parity, and connection mode.

Rugged Design and Easy Installation

  • Dimensions: 100 × 94 × 25 mm
  • Housing: metal construction for long‑term durability
  • Operating temperature: –30 °C to +85 °C
  • Mounting: wall, 19" rack, or DIN rail
