Serial automation with the rule.box RS232/422/485 from Wiesemann & Theis

The rule.box RS232/422/485 from Wiesemann & Theis is a compact, intelligent control hub for automation tasks in building automation and Industry 4.0. With preinstalled Node-RED software, control and analysis workflows can be created graphically via drag-and-drop – ideal for quickly implementing automation projects without deep programming knowledge.

Thanks to its switchable serial interface (RS232/RS422/RS485), the rule.box allows direct integration of legacy machines, measurement sensors, or control devices into modern IP-based networks. The combination of serial communication, Node-RED automation, and Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) makes it a flexible gateway between field devices and IT systems.

Node-RED: visual automation

Node-RED is a graphical development tool based on easy-to-understand visualization. In the preinstalled environment, functions, sensors, and logic blocks can be linked into “flows”. This intuitive platform enables the creation of customized automation solutions with just a few clicks.

Typical applications:

  • Reading measurements from serial sensors and automatically forwarding data to databases
  • Controlling external devices via RS422 or RS485 interfaces
  • Processing process data from machines and visualizing it directly on the dashboard

The serial interface is fully configurable, allowing flexible adjustment of transmission mode, baud rate, and data format to connect almost any serial device.

Versatile interfaces: RS232, RS422, and RS485

Hardware-based switching between serial modes provides maximum flexibility:

  • RS232: for classic point-to-point connections such as PCs, printers, or control devices
  • RS422: for low-interference, longer transmission distances in industrial networks
  • RS485: for multipoint (bus) connections with up to 32 devices

This supports both simple individual sensors and complex machine controls. Integration of Modbus RTU or ASCII protocols into Node-RED allows industrial devices to communicate more efficiently.

Flexible network integration

The rule.box RS232/422/485 has a 10/100 BaseT network interface for easy integration into existing infrastructures. Devices can be linked via MQTT, HTTP, Modbus/TCP, or REST API, serving as a gateway that delivers serial data directly into IP networks.

Preinstalled nodes allow immediate use of Wiesemann & Theis Web-IOs, Web thermometers, and Com-Servers. Extendable nodes – for cloud platforms, IoT sensors, or proprietary systems – are available via the global Node-RED community.

Data management and visualization

The rule.box supports storage and further processing of serial data in MariaDB, SQLite, or local file systems. The integrated Node-RED dashboard provides clear visual representation of real-time measurements or control parameters. Dashboards can be customized to monitor processes or directly adjust device settings.

Example: In a production plant, serial flow sensors capture measurement values, which are displayed on the dashboard and compared to setpoints. Deviations automatically trigger alerts or control actions.

Energy efficiency and power supply

Power can be supplied via Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) or an external DC source (24–48 V). PoE allows space-saving installation without separate power cabling. Buffer capacitors ensure controlled shutdown during power outages, improving data safety.

The low-power design minimizes heat generation for long-term continuous operation in energy-optimized industrial or building systems.

Easy commissioning with WuTility

Wiesemann & Theis WuTility software automatically detects the rule.box on the network and guides users through initial setup. The integrated web-based management interface allows direct configuration of network settings, serial parameters, and Node-RED flows.

Standards compliance and robustness

The rule.box meets international standards:

  • EN 61000-6-2: immunity
  • EN 55032: emissions Class B
  • EN 61000-3-2 / EN 61000-3-3: electrical compatibility

Its rugged housing is built for EMC-heavy environments and DIN rail mounting, making it ideal for control cabinet and machinery installations. A five-year warranty secures the investment.

Typical applications

  • Building automation: integration of serial heating, air conditioning, or ventilation controls into IP-based management systems
  • Industry 4.0: networking machine controllers and process sensors via unified communication protocols
  • IoT gateway: linking classic RS485 devices with cloud-based IoT platforms such as AWS or Azure
  • Laboratory automation: controlling and capturing data from instruments in scientific environments
