The device is designed specifically for professionals who value reliability, versatility, and security. Wiesemann & Theis’ renowned quality and durability are combined here with forward-looking communication standards such as OPC UA, MQTT, REST API, and SNMP traps. The Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out thus meets the highest demands for data acquisition, transmission, and security in modern industrial and IT environments.

This article explains the functions, technical features, and wide range of applications of the device, illustrating why the W&T Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out has become an indispensable element of modern industrial and smart building infrastructures.

Precise Digital Signal Control and Acquisition

The Wiesemann & Theis Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out combines four digital inputs and four independent relay outputs, enabling flexible control of external devices. Each input can be operated as potential-free and includes a 32-bit pulse counter for precise detection of fast pulse sequences or switching events. This feature is particularly beneficial for machine data acquisition, production monitoring, and process counting.

The device’s switching outputs are implemented as potential-free changeover contacts (CO). They support switching voltages up to 48 V DC and currents up to 2 A. When used with external coupling relays, switching voltages can be extended to 110 or 230 V. This allows safe activation of both industrial equipment and building systems—from lighting and barriers to alarm installations.

Intuitive Web Interface and Flexible Control Options

A key feature of the Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out is its user-friendly, browser-based interface. Users can access the device directly via a browser without needing additional software. The graphical interface displays switching states in real time and allows manual control of outputs and live monitoring of inputs. This is especially useful for service technicians who need to respond quickly and independently to system status changes.

With support for HTTP, HTTPS, and WebSockets, the device can be securely integrated into various network infrastructures. Developers can use AJAX or JavaScript to embed I/O data into custom web applications. Remote access via smartphones or tablets is also possible thanks to mobile optimization of the web interface.

Network Communication and IoT Integration

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out integrates seamlessly into modern IoT and Industry 4.0 architectures. In addition to standard network interfaces, it supports protocols such as OPC UA (for industrial communication), MQTT (for cloud connectivity), and REST API (for flexible web integration). This allows direct communication with automation platforms, IoT dashboards, and management systems.

Via SNMP traps, fault messages can be sent directly to network management systems—an advantage in data centers, production sites, and security systems. Alarm forwarding via email or TCP sockets is also supported, ensuring administrators are notified immediately of critical events.

Box-to-Box Communication and Remote Operation

A standout feature of the Web-IO 4.0 is its box-to-box communication. This allows two or more Web-IO devices from Wiesemann & Theis to communicate directly over the network. Signals detected at one site can be reproduced 1:1 as switching actions at another, making the feature ideal for remote or distributed systems such as gate control, pumping stations, or security zones across multiple buildings.

Communication takes place entirely via TCP/IP, eliminating the need for additional PLCs or gateways. This IP-based control and monitoring setup ensures maximum flexibility—especially for remote monitoring and industrial automation processes.

Comprehensive Alarm and Notification Functions

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out supports up to 30 customizable event actions that trigger automatically based on input/output changes. These actions can include email notifications, SNMP alerts, HTTP requests, or relay switching, making it simple to configure automation workflows.

In practice, if a sensor fails, a door opens unexpectedly, or a machine process reaches a defined state, the Web-IO reacts automatically. Multiple conditions can be combined to prevent false alarms or refine responses—for example, an input contact can both trigger an audible alarm and send a timestamped email alert.

Data Logging and Time Synchronization

The device features an internal data logger that records state changes and events over long periods. Depending on the interval, data storage capacity ranges from seven weeks to several decades. Logs can be exported as CSV files, sent by email, or transmitted via FTP. This makes the system ideal for auditing, quality assurance, and data analysis.

A battery-backed real-time clock (RTC) ensures time precision and can be synchronized with NTP servers for consistent timekeeping. All log entries remain traceable even during network interruptions or power outages—essential for reliable documentation in industrial environments.

Integration into Automation Environments

Integrating the Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out into existing systems is straightforward and standards-compliant. In addition to OPC UA and MQTT, it supports Modbus TCP, SNMP v1/v2/v3, Syslog, and ODBC integration with Sensobase databases. This allows seamless connection to building management systems or cloud-based monitoring environments.

Developers appreciate the openness of the interface: communication via TCP or UDP sockets (server/client mode) allows custom automation solutions and integration into proprietary software. Whether used for production line monitoring, access control, or environmental data, the Web-IO provides a universal platform.

Secure Communication and Remote Access

Security is a core focus for industrial connectivity. The Wiesemann & Theis Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out employs encrypted communication and modern authentication methods. HTTPS and password protection ensure safe configuration access. Administrators can define user profiles and manage privileges according to specific operational needs.

The firmware also supports exporting and restoring configuration data, enabling rapid deployment of multiple devices—especially beneficial in large infrastructures.

Versatile Applications in Industry and Building Technology

The Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out can control lighting, shutters, gate systems, or access points in building automation. Its network functions allow remote operations, such as control across multiple buildings. In industrial setup, it logs machine states, collects sensor data, or issues automated commands. The pulse counters allow accurate tracking of production cycles and throughput volumes.

In home automation, it optimizes heating and lighting. For security systems, it monitors motion detectors, door contacts, or smoke alarms and reacts accordingly. Its compatibility with standard protocols ensures integration in smart home networks as well.

Flexible Power Supply and Installation

The device’s power system offers flexibility: it supports both Power over Ethernet (PoE) and an external power source (12–48 V DC). This adaptability allows deployment in office and industrial environments alike, with or without existing PoE infrastructure.

DIN-rail mounting makes installation easy in control cabinets. Rugged construction and compliance with EN 61000-6-2 ensure reliable operation under harsh conditions. The Web-IO also meets EMC standards EN 55032:2015 + A1 Class B, EN 61000-3-2, and EN 61000-3-3, ensuring low interference emissions.

Reliability, Warranty, and Maintenance

Like all Wiesemann & Theis products, the Web-IO 4.0 Digital 4xIn/Out is built to the highest quality standards. Designed for continuous operation, it is durable and backed by a five-year manufacturer’s warranty. The battery-backed clock ensures accurate timekeeping, and firmware updates can be performed via the web interface.

Maintenance requirements remain low even during long-term use. Configuration and diagnostics happen directly via the network, reducing on-site maintenance. Multiple devices can be managed centrally, allowing efficient scaling of large monitoring infrastructures.
