Compact network monitoring with the IP-Watcher 2xIn, 2xOut from Wiesemann & Theis

Network monitoring plays a central role in modern industrial and office environments to ensure stable operation of devices, machines, and IT infrastructures. The IP-Watcher 2xIn, 2xOut from Wiesemann & Theis is a compact monitoring tool designed specifically for continuous availability checks of network participants. Through cyclical IP address or hostname checks, the system detects failures early and immediately initiates measures – via email notifications or by activating physical warning signals through its switching outputs.

With simple commissioning via WuTility, an intuitive web interface, and flexible power options via Power-over-Ethernet or DC input, the IP-Watcher offers seamless integration into existing networks. It is suitable for both Industry 4.0 applications and security-critical IT structures.

Reliable availability checks and flexible alerting

The IP-Watcher performs availability tests on configured IP addresses or hostnames at freely definable intervals. In addition to classic ping tests, it can also conduct targeted TCP port checks to monitor the reachability of specific network services.

If a network device fails or a service stops responding for a set period of time, an alarm is triggered. Two alerting options are available:

  • Email notifications to designated recipients for immediate response actions.
  • Physical alerts via two digital outputs (24V, max. 500 mA) to activate indicators such as warning lights, buzzers, or other devices.

The current status of all monitored devices can be viewed at any time via the web interface, giving administrators centralized and transparent control over network conditions.

Easy commissioning and user-friendly configuration

Setting up the IP-Watcher takes only a few steps using the WuTility software. In just three clicks, the device is operational. The web-based interface provides a clear overview of all settings and allows customization of:

  • The list of hosts/IP addresses to monitor
  • Check intervals and delay times for failure notifications
  • Alerting options (email vs. switching output)

This makes it easy to implement tailored monitoring concepts without complex network configurations or extra software installations.

Digital inputs and outputs for integrated actions

The IP-Watcher features two digital inputs (24V logic) and two digital outputs. Inputs can be used to integrate external signals into the logic, e.g., from pushbuttons or sensors, enabling manual or event-driven alerts.

Outputs can control external devices or warning systems – whether visual indicators like flashing lights or audible alarms. This allows physical warning mechanisms to be directly linked to network monitoring processes.

Comparison with more complex solutions

In contrast to extensive network management systems, the IP-Watcher is focused specifically on availability checks and rapid alerting. It requires no elaborate setup, no additional software framework, and no lengthy training. For situations requiring immediate response to device failures, it offers a straightforward and reliable solution.

Those needing more advanced features like firewalls or VPN can find options in Wiesemann & Theis’ product range, such as the Microwall VPN or Microwall IO.

Typical applications

  • Industry 4.0: monitoring crucial machine controls and PLC systems
  • IT administration: tracking availability of servers, switches, and routers
  • Building technology: monitoring IP-based door systems, security devices, or climate control systems
  • IoT devices: ensuring reachability of sensors or gateways in smart factory environments
  • Data centers: triggering alerts for critical service outages to minimize downtime

Flexible power supply and industrial compliance

The IP-Watcher supports flexible power options:

  • Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) via data pairs or unused wires
  • Alternatively, external DC supply (24–48V) via screw terminal

Additional buffer capacitors enable controlled shutdown in case of power failure. The device complies with standards such as EN 61000-6-2 (immunity) and EN 55032:2015 + A1 Class B (emissions) and is therefore suitable for industrial deployment.

Durability and operational reliability

With its robust design, the IP-Watcher is built for continuous operation. DIN rail mounting ensures secure installation in control cabinets, and the hardware platform is optimized for high reliability even in complex network environments. Wiesemann & Theis provides a five-year warranty for the device.

Effective network monitoring made easy

The IP-Watcher 2xIn, 2xOut offers a quick, reliable, and easily integrable solution for monitoring the availability of critical network devices. With combined email alerting and physical output activation, simple configuration, and flexible power supply options, it is a universal tool for administrators, security teams, and automation engineers.

Whether for industrial plants, server rooms, or IoT environments – the IP-Watcher, through its direct alerts and clear operation, ensures secure and stable network performance.

The IP-Watcher 2xIn, 2xOut monitors a configurable list of IP addresses or hostnames cyclically for reachability. Besides simple ping tests, it can also check the availability of specific TCP ports to ensure that particular services or applications are accessible. If a network node does not respond for a configurable time, the IP-Watcher triggers an alarm.

This alarm can be sent via email notification to administrators to enable immediate action. Additionally, two relay outputs (24V technology, sourcing up to 500 mA) are available to control external warning devices such as signal lamps, horns, or other consumers. The current status of all monitored devices is clearly displayed at any time in the browser window, enabling easy monitoring and management. These features make the IP-Watcher a reliable solution for network monitoring and device failure alerting.
